Why Benbecula?

We are crafting a unique island Scotch whisky spirit that not only reflects the beautiful land from which it comes, but a spirit that leaves a lasting legacy. Our mission is to produce this high-quality, Hebridean spirit and support the revitalisation of our island region, bringing job opportunities and sustainable growth.

Owning a private whisky cask from Benbecula is an opportunity to invest in whisky during our early years and become part of the distillery’s long-term legacy. Whisky cask owners form a small founding group, with their names and cask numbers engraved at the distillery to mark their role in shaping Benbecula’s future.

Benbecula Distillery is a fully operational Scotch whisky distillery, offering private whisky casks for sale directly to customers. We are HMRC-accredited and follow strict regulations to ensure full legal compliance and transparency for all whisky cask ownership.

Our Whisky

Benbecula Distillery incorporates essential aspects of island life and farming, including the revival of ancient distillation techniques that shape our Hebridean single malt Scotch whisky. Seaweed is foraged from the island’s shores and used to enrich the soils on founder Angus MacMillan’s own croft. Here, bere barley, the oldest known strain of barley dating back over 6,000 years, is grown on the island. This, allied to the addition of heather within the peat kiln, produces our single malt whisky with gentle smoke, floral notes, and a distinctive marine character.

The distillation and production is overseen by Master Distiller Brendan McCarron. Renowned for his work at Glenmorangie, Oban, Tobermory, Deanston, and Bunnahabhain, Brendan is widely recognised as one of the most respected figures in the Scotch whisky industry.

We are crafting whisky that reflects our islands. Having begun production in 2024, we are sharing our spirit through a private whisky cask programme, allowing whisky enthusiasts and those who wish to own a private whisky cask to be involved from the beginning, and to hold a piece of Benbecula that can mature and last a lifetime.

Cask Ownership Transparency

Benbecula Distillery is a fully operational Scotch whisky distillery, selling private whisky casks directly to customers with no third-party involvement. This whisky cask ownership programme is designed for those who appreciate the craft of whisky and long-term maturation.
We are committed to transparency throughout our whisky cask ownership process, with all details clearly outlined in our Terms & Conditions. Benbecula Distillery is HMRC-accredited and follows strict regulations to ensure full legal compliance and transparency for all cask owners.

Key Terms

  • Customers purchase the rights to the whisky, with ownership document in a certificate with their name
  • Casks are stored at our bonded warehouse, insured for seven years
  • Whisky cannot be bottled until after Benbecula Distillery releases its inaugural batch (estimated 2029)
  • Ownership transfers are allowed, but must be approved by the distillery to ensure legal compliance
  • Owners are responsible for all bottling costs and must use an approved bottler
