The Benbecula Half Marathon returns on Saturday 30 May 2026, marking the second year since the race was revived following a five-year hiatus.

Organised by the North Uist Amateur Athletics Club (NUAAC), founded in 1991, the event helps support local young athletes in attending competitions and developing their skills in track and field and cross-country athletics.

We are proud to return as title sponsor for a second consecutive year, alongside principal sponsors the Dark Island Hotel and J MacDonald Plumbing & Heating.

This year’s event has attracted runners from across the UK and more than ten nationalities, with organisers aiming to display the flag of every participating country on race day.

Starting at 11am from Liniclate School, runners will gather before being led in procession behind a piper to the start line, a tradition that has quickly become one of the race’s defining moments.

The half marathon route takes competitors around the roads of Benbecula on a largely flat course that has become increasingly popular with runners seeking personal best times while enjoying the scenery and atmosphere of the islands.

Following the race, participants and supporters will gather at the Dark Island Hotel for refreshments and the awards ceremony.

Celebrations will continue later that evening with a ceilidh featuring live music. Entry to the ceilidh is by donation, with all proceeds supporting the Western Isles Cancer Care Initiative. Funds raised in Benbecula, North Uist, South Uist and Barra remain within the local island communities.

Supporting Our Community

Supporting community events is a central part of who we are. Since opening in 2024, we have been proud to support a range of local initiatives across the islands, including piping competitions, youth music events, agricultural shows and community gatherings.

We are delighted to continue our support of the Benbecula Half Marathon as title sponsor, helping to bring visitors to the islands while raising funds that benefit local causes and support opportunities for young athletes.

Participants in this year’s half marathon will also receive a voucher to visit the distillery, where they can enjoy tours, tastings, our café, and exhibitions featuring local artists and collectors.

Speaking ahead of race day, Graham MacLeod of the Benbecula Half Marathon Committee said:

“The Benbecula Half Marathon is about much more than running. It’s about bringing people together, showcasing the islands, supporting local young athletes and celebrating community spirit. We’re proud to welcome runners travelling from across the UK and beyond to be part of it once again.”

Benbecula Distillery founder Angus MacMillan added:

“Supporting local events and organisations is central to what we do as a distillery. The return of the Benbecula Half Marathon has brought tremendous energy to the islands, and we’re delighted to continue as title sponsor for a second year.”
